How to Select a Coach

Clients often tell me things like “I’ve never told anyone that before” or “I didn’t realize I felt this way until I said it out loud.” This type of discovery and vulnerability requires a level of comfort and safety that is unique to the coaching relationship. Where else in your life do you have an unbiased, professionally trained listener, who is 100% there for your growth and success, and who is bound by strict confidentiality? Your relationship with your coach is very unique, and it is a relationship! Thus, it is important to find a coach that you resonate with at a head and heart level.

Here are a few questions to consider when choosing a coach:

  1. Is it important for my coach to share similarities with me (i.e. gender, experience, etc.)?

  2. Is it important for my coach to have worked in a particular industry, position, etc.?

  3. Is it important for my coach to have certification in certain assessment instruments?

  4. Do I have a preference for working in person vs. virtually?

Ultimately, whether or not someone is a good fit for you is a feeling rather than a thought. If you are someone who tends to make decisions strictly from your head, try tapping into your heart and body for this decision and notice how that feels different.
